An evolutionary perspective on children

I'm reading The Evolution of Childhood, an absolutely fascinating book. This quote is just one of the little gems it offers:

The human newborn is the product of ten thousand generations of human (and many more of protohuman) evolution, which prepared it, despite its early expulsion and secondary altriciality, to survive and thrive against daunting odds. (p. 211-212)
